Lessons from the NATS Airport Chaos: What Single-Point IT Failures Cost Your Business
On Tuesday 9 September 2026, a technical failure at NATS grounded around 1,300 flights across the UK. Heathrow and Gatwick took the worst of it. By Wednesday another 177 flights had gone, almost all of them at Heathrow, as airlines tried to get aircraft and crews back where they were supposed to be (BusinessCloud).
NATS said the problem was fixed, but that recovery took “longer than we had hoped.” That sentence is the part every business owner should sit with. The fix wasn’t the hard bit. Getting everything back to normal afterwards was.
This isn’t the first time. In August 2023, a single malformed flight plan took down the same system and the backup that was supposed to cover for it. The CAA’s independent review found over 700,000 passengers were affected: 300,000 by cancellations, 95,000 by delays of more than three hours, and another 300,000 by shorter ones. Two identical systems, one identical flaw, nothing to fall back on.
One system, everything stops
Your business isn’t directing commercial air traffic. The weakness is still the same one.
A single point of failure is any part of your setup that nothing else can cover for. One server holding your line-of-business application. One internet line into the office. One cloud platform your team can’t work without. One member of staff who knows the admin password. When any of those stop, so does the work.
Most firms only find out which of their systems is a single point of failure on the day it fails.
What an outage actually costs
The lost hours are the easy part to see. The rest of the bill turns up later.
Idle staff. Wages carry on being paid whether or not anyone can log in. Twenty people unable to work for a morning is a real number, and you can calculate it: total your monthly payroll, divide by 160 working hours, multiply by the people affected.
Missed revenue. Orders that don’t get taken, quotes that don’t go out, invoices that don’t get raised. Some of that comes back. Some of it goes to a competitor.
Client trust. Customers are forgiving about a short outage they hear about quickly. They’re much less forgiving about silence, or about the second and third occurrence.
The backlog. Work doesn’t pause during an outage, it queues. A half day down often costs two or three days of catching up, and that catch-up period is where mistakes get made.
The government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey tracks what disruption costs UK businesses each year, and the figures run into thousands of pounds per significant incident before recovery time is counted. Outages that have nothing to do with an attack cost the same way. The cause differs. The invoice looks similar.
Where we usually find the weak point

The backup one is the most common and the most expensive. A backup job reporting success tells you a file was written. It doesn’t tell you the file can be opened, that it contains what you think it contains, or how many hours it takes to get a working server back from it. Those are three separate questions, and they only get answered by doing a restore.
None of these cause a problem day to day. That’s exactly why they survive for years.
Building in resilience before it breaks
High availability takes planning and a budget. It doesn’t happen on its own.
Here’s what we put in place for clients:
- 24/7 proactive monitoring, so we’re looking at failing disks, full drives, and failed backup jobs before they turn into an outage
- Backup and disaster recovery, with restores tested regularly so your recovery time is a known figure rather than a hope
- Network redundancy, including secondary internet connections and failover hardware, so one piece of kit stumbling doesn’t take the office with it
- Patch and lifecycle management, keeping systems current and replacing hardware before it reaches end of life
- Cyber Essentials certification, which forces a documented answer on patching, access control, and configuration rather than an assumed one
- A written continuity plan, so your team knows what to do in the first 30 minutes without waiting to be told
Two numbers should sit in that plan. How much data you can afford to lose, measured in hours. How long you can be down before it hurts, also measured in hours. Every decision about backup and redundancy follows from those two figures, and most businesses have never written them down.
When redundancy isn’t worth it
Not every single point of failure is worth removing. Duplicating a system costs money every month, and some systems would cost more to make redundant than a day of downtime would cost you.
A warehouse label printer that stops for four hours is an annoyance. Your accounts system stopping for four hours during month end is a different conversation. The honest answer is to price both and decide deliberately. We’d rather tell a client that a particular risk isn’t worth spending on than sell them redundancy they don’t need.
Two questions worth answering this week
How long could your business operate if your main system went down right now? And when did you last restore a file from backup to check it worked?
If either answer is uncomfortable, that’s the gap worth closing first.
