About the client

Purple Direct, a telecommunications business focused on providing mobile phones and airtime plans to consumers, identified an opportunity to expand its service offering and enter the direct-to-consumer mobile marketplace. To support this growth, the organisation required a modern digital platform capable of managing mobile handset and airtime plan sales while providing a seamless experience for both customers and internal teams.

The company’s vision was ambitious. They wanted to launch quickly, validate the market opportunity, and then evolve towards a fully automated self-service platform that would reduce operational overhead while improving the customer journey. Sprint Integration was engaged to design, manage, and deliver the technology solution required to support this transformation.

The challenge

Entering a competitive telecommunications market required Purple Direct to launch a reliable and scalable platform capable of handling product selection, order processing, customer management, and integration with network suppliers.

A reliable, scalable platform

Purple Direct needed to launch a reliable and scalable platform capable of handling product selection, order processing, customer management, and integration with network suppliers.

Integration with VodafoneThree

One of the key requirements was integration with VodafoneThree systems, allowing orders to be processed directly through the network provider.

Agents and end customers

The solution needed to support both internal call centre agents and, ultimately, end customers making purchases online.

Speed to market vs. scalability

The project also needed to balance speed to market with long-term scalability. Rather than investing significant time and budget in a complex self-service platform from day one, Purple Direct wanted a phased approach that would deliver immediate business value while laying the foundations for future growth.

The solution

Working closely with the client, Sprint Integration developed a comprehensive project specification which divided the development into two clearly defined phases, ultimately transforming the assisted-sales platform into a complete self-service ecommerce solution. The platform was enhanced to provide:

Online product selection

Online handset and tariff selection

Automated purchasing

Automated purchasing workflows

Account management

Customer account management

Order tracking

Order tracking and status updates

Network integration

Direct integration with network provider systems

Seamless journeys

Seamless end-to-end customer journeys

+ Phased delivery

A faster route to market, built to scale

By providing a centralised platform for order management, Purple Direct was able to launch its new service offering without waiting for a full ecommerce solution to be completed, providing a faster route to market and an opportunity to validate business processes. With self-service capabilities later in place, Purple Direct was able to scale operations without increasing administrative overhead, creating a platform capable of supporting future business growth.

Our process

The development was delivered in two clearly defined phases, providing immediate business value while laying the foundations for future growth:

1

Phase 1: Internal Sales Platform

The first phase focused on enabling Purple Direct’s call centre team to begin selling products quickly and efficiently. A streamlined web application was developed that provided call centre agents with access to handset and tariff information while integrating directly with VodafoneThree through an API connection. This allowed agents to:

  • Search available products and plans
  • Process customer orders
  • Manage existing orders
  • Track order status
  • Interact with VodafoneThree systems through a single interface

By providing a centralised platform for order management, Purple Direct was able to launch its new service offering without waiting for a full ecommerce solution to be completed, providing a faster route to market and an opportunity to validate business processes before progressing to the next stage of development.

2

Phase 2: Customer Self-Service Portal

Once the initial platform had been successfully deployed and proven within the business, development moved to Phase 2. The objective was to transform the assisted-sales platform into a complete self-service ecommerce solution that allowed customers to independently browse products, compare plans, purchase services, and manage their accounts online.

This significantly reduced reliance on manual processing while improving accessibility and convenience for customers. With self-service capabilities in place, Purple Direct was able to scale operations without increasing administrative overhead, creating a platform capable of supporting future business growth.

To ensure flexibility, performance, and future scalability, Sprint Integration collaborated closely with its trusted development partners throughout the project lifecycle, building on modern web technologies deployed within a robust hosting environment.

Front-end: React

The customer-facing user interface was developed using React, providing a responsive and intuitive experience across desktop and mobile devices, while supporting future enhancements and feature deployment.

Back-end: Laravel & Node.js

A combination of Laravel and Node.js managed business logic, API integrations, order workflows, customer data processing, and system communications, providing a powerful, scalable foundation for complex telecoms transactions and integrations.

Hosting: Apache

The completed platform was hosted within Sprint Integration’s Apache-based hosting environment, providing reliable application delivery with the stability, security, and performance to grow alongside the business.

Results & business impact

The phased delivery approach provided Purple Direct with immediate business benefits while minimising project risk:

Faster time to market

By launching an internal sales platform first, Purple Direct was able to begin selling products and generating revenue without waiting for the completion of a fully featured ecommerce solution.

Reduced operational complexity

The VodafoneThree API integration streamlined order management processes, reducing manual administration and improving efficiency for call centre staff.

Improved customer experience

The self-service portal empowered customers to purchase products and manage their accounts online, creating a more convenient and modern buying experience.

Scalable foundation for growth

The React, Laravel, and Node.js architecture provided a flexible platform capable of supporting future enhancements, additional integrations, and increased transaction volumes.

By delivering an initial operational platform followed by a fully featured self-service solution, Sprint Integration enabled Purple Direct to launch quickly, validate its business model, and build a scalable foundation for long-term growth, transforming the way Purple Direct sells and manages mobile products and services.
